Stellantis (NYSE: STLA) announced it will discontinue its hydrogen fuel cell technology development program, citing limited hydrogen refueling infrastructure and high capital requirements as key factors in the decision.
The automaker will end series production of hydrogen-powered Pro One vans that was scheduled to begin this summer at facilities in Hordain, France, and Gliwice, Poland. The company stated it does not anticipate adoption of hydrogen-powered light commercial vehicles before the end of the decade.
"The hydrogen market remains a niche segment, with no prospects of mid-term economic sustainability," said Jean-Philippe Imparato, Chief Operating Officer for Enlarged Europe. "We must make clear and responsible choices to ensure our competitiveness and meet the expectations of our customers with our electric and hybrid passenger and light commercial vehicles offensive."
Stellantis indicated the decision will not impact staffing at its production sites, with research and development activities related to hydrogen technology being redirected to other projects. The company will focus on its electric and hybrid vehicle programs instead.
The automaker has initiated discussions with shareholders of Symbio, its hydrogen technology joint venture, to evaluate market consequences and preserve the company's interests. Stellantis cited the need to respond to demanding CO2 regulations in Europe as part of its rationale for the strategic shift.
The announcement comes as the automotive industry faces varying adoption rates for alternative fuel technologies, with electric vehicles gaining broader market acceptance compared to hydrogen fuel cell vehicles in the commercial segment.
