Spirit Airlines enters Chapter 11 bankruptcy restructuring
Spirit Airlines (NYSE American: FLYY) has voluntarily filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection as part of a financial restructuring process, the company announced in an open letter to customers.
The airline stated it will continue operating flights normally during the court-supervised restructuring. Customers can still book flights and use existing tickets, credits, and loyalty points. The company's Free Spirit loyalty program, Saver$ Club benefits, and credit card terms remain in effect.
Spirit emphasized that the Chapter 11 process allows companies to restructure their businesses while maintaining operations. The airline noted that most major U.S. carriers have previously used similar restructuring tools.
The company has established a dedicated website at www.spiritrestructuring.com to provide information about the restructuring process. Court filings and related documents are available through a separate portal, with a customer information line accessible at (855) 952-6606 for U.S. callers and +1 (971) 715-2831 for international inquiries.
Spirit serves destinations across the United States, Latin America, and the Caribbean with an all-Airbus fleet. The airline markets itself as offering affordable travel options with flexible pricing structures.
The Chapter 11 filing represents a significant development for the budget carrier as it seeks to address its financial challenges while maintaining passenger service operations.
