Viewers turned out in droves as Oprah Winfrey returned to a talk-show format Sunday evening on her cable network OWN.
The Wall Street Journal reported 1.1 million tuned in to watch Oprah, although this is far less than the 6.5 million she averaged during her normal daytime show on broadcast TV. Still it trounced any other show on the network.
While a solid cable debut, Oprah's return fell short of taking any records. The premiere of CNN's "Piers Morgan Tonight" last January had 2.1 million viewers, although now it averages just 735,000 viewers. Meanwhile the History Channel's "Pawn Stars" averaged more than 5 million viewers in December.
Oprah's new show is in a different format than her broadcast show. Instead of interviewing guests in a studio, the debut episode had her interview Aerosmith's Steven Tyler at his house in Sunapee, N.H.
OWN is jointly owned by Ms. Winfrey and Discovery Communications (Nasdaq: DISCA).
