Rogers launches satellite-to-mobile text service across Canada

Rogers Communications Inc. (NYSE: RCI) launched Rogers Satellite, a satellite-to-mobile text messaging service available to all Canadians. The service expands Rogers' coverage to over 5.4 million square kilometers, which the company states is 2.5 times more than any other Canadian wireless carrier.

The service offers a free beta trial through October, after which it will be included at no additional cost for Rogers Ultimate Plan customers and available to other Canadians for $15 per month. Beta trial participants will receive a $5 monthly discount for the first 12 months.

Rogers Satellite initially supports text messaging and text-to-911 services, with plans to expand to apps, data and voice services including 911 voice services. The technology uses low-earth orbit satellites combined with Rogers' national wireless spectrum and works on most modern smartphones.

"We're proud to introduce this ground-breaking technology to help Canadians stay safe and connected in more places," said Tony Staffieri, President and CEO of Rogers.

According to the company, only 18 percent of Canada is covered by traditional wireless networks. The satellite service functions outdoors in areas where users can see the sky, including on bodies of water.

The BC Search and Rescue Association and Search and Rescue Association of Alberta endorsed the service launch, citing improved emergency response capabilities in remote areas. The Northwestern Ontario Municipal Association also supported the technology as a step toward closing the digital divide in rural communities.

Rogers stated it has invested $45 billion in wireless infrastructure over the past 40 years and claims to operate Canada's most reliable 5G+ network.
