Planet Labs PBC (NYSE: PL) released first light images from its Pelican-3 satellite, captured on September 5, 2025, showing Turin, Italy from an altitude of 458 km. The satellite launched on SpaceX's Falcon 9 NAOS mission on August 26, 2025, alongside Pelican-4.

The Pelican-3 and Pelican-4 satellites join Pelican-2 and Pelican-1 in Planet's constellation of high-resolution imaging satellites. These satellites provide imagery across six multispectral bands and are designed to deliver up to 40 cm class resolution. Each satellite includes NVIDIA Jetson AI chips for on-orbit computing.

Planet expects its next generation of Pelican satellites, launching beginning next year, to reach 30 cm imagery resolution. The company stated that image quality will improve as the spacecraft complete instrument calibration and reach their final operational orbits.

"We're thrilled to be sharing our Pelican-3 first light imagery, captured just days after these satellites were launched," said Will Marshall, co-founder and CEO of Planet.

The San Francisco-based company designs, builds and operates Earth observation satellites that provide daily satellite imagery and geospatial solutions to customers in agriculture, forestry, intelligence, education and finance sectors, as well as government agencies.
