PepsiCo. (NYSE: PEP) in an effort to lead "innovation," is aiming to roll out yet another reduced calorie cola beverage to quench the thirst of those whose tastebuds they've missed.
Pepsi currently has three low- to zero-calorie offerings: Pepsi MAX, Pepsi One, and Diet Pepsi. There's also Caffeine Free Diet Pepsi for the less ambitious.
Today, however, Pepsi is pushing the boundaries of scientifically-engineered, carbonated, flavor infused with the testing of Pepsi NEXT.
If you've reduced your consumption of Pepsi regular due to concerns over too much sugar, fear not. With Pepsi NEXT, you'll be able to enjoy 60 percent more full-flavored Pepsi with Pepsi NEXT's 60 percent reduction in sugar.
So, Pepsi is either: 1) trying really hard to hit a niche market, or 2) saying that their other low-calories colas completely miss the mark on flavor. Wait, Pepsi Beverages America CEO Massimo d'Amore answers that already: "We developed Pepsi NEXT, a great tasting, full-flavor cola with 60 percent less sugar...Pepsi NEXT resonated very well with consumers who are seeking a new, reduced sugar alternative to their loved cola."
Our suggestion? Take a page from Ford's (NYSE: F) book for advertising and tell customers to "Drink One."
Pepsi shares ended up just 0.5 percent today.
