March 5, 2026 4:04 PM EST

OpenAI announced the beta release of ChatGPT for Excel, an add-in that integrates the AI assistant directly into Excel workbooks to help users build and analyze spreadsheet models. The company also introduced financial data integrations for ChatGPT from providers including FactSet, Dow Jones Factiva, LSEG, and S&P Global.

The Excel integration is powered by GPT-5.4, which OpenAI describes as optimized for financial reasoning and Excel-based modeling. According to the company's internal investment banking benchmark, performance improved from 43.7% with GPT-5 to 87.3% with GPT-5.4 Thinking on tasks such as building three-statement models with proper formatting and citations.

ChatGPT for Excel allows users to create and update spreadsheet models using natural language commands while preserving Excel's native formulas and structures. The tool can analyze large spreadsheets, trace connections between sheets and formulas, and explain changes to outputs. Users must approve changes before ChatGPT modifies workbooks.

The beta version is available to ChatGPT Business, Enterprise, Edu, Teachers, Pro, and Plus users in the United States, Canada, and Australia. For Enterprise, Edu, and Teacher workspaces, administrators must enable access for specific users. A Google Sheets version is planned.

The financial data integrations include partnerships with Moody's, Dow Jones Factiva, MSCI, Third Bridge, and MT Newswire, with FactSet integration coming soon. These connections allow users to access market and company data within ChatGPT workflows for research and analysis tasks.

OpenAI acknowledged current limitations in the beta version, including longer response times and potential formatting issues that may require manual adjustment. The company stated it is working with financial institutions across research, underwriting, auditing, and operations workflows.

ChatGPT Enterprise includes security features such as role-based access control, SAML SSO, encryption, and data residency controls. OpenAI stated that data shared with ChatGPT Enterprise is not used to train or improve its models by default.
