Microchip Technology Inc. (NASDAQ: MCHP) announced it achieved interoperability between its automotive serializer/deserializer chipsets and those from AVIVA Links, demonstrating that ASA Motion Link (ASA-ML) technology from different vendors can work together seamlessly.
The demonstration represents progress for the Automotive SerDes Alliance's open standard, which aims to replace proprietary automotive connectivity solutions. ASA-ML supports asymmetric high-speed video, control and data transmission up to 16 Gbps for automotive applications including Advanced Driver Assistance Systems and In-Vehicle Infotainment systems.
The Automotive SerDes Alliance includes more than 175 members, with OEMs such as BMW, Ford, GM, Hyundai Kia Motor Company, Nio, Renault/Ampere, Stellantis, Volvo and Xiapeng Motors participating in the ecosystem.
"This collaboration highlights the benefits of a multi-source, open standards approach and gives automotive OEMs and Tier 1 suppliers the confidence to design their next-generation ADAS architectures around ASA-ML," said Kevin So, vice president of Microchip's communications business unit.
AVIVA Links, which has announced a pending acquisition by NXP, develops multi-Gigabit vehicle infrastructure for automotive systems. "Proving interoperability with Microchip's ASA-ML SerDes chipset is an important milestone for the automotive industry," said Kamal Dalmia, CEO of AVIVA Links.
Microchip acquired VSI Ltd. to enter the ASA-ML market and describes itself as the first major semiconductor vendor to bring an ASA-ML chipset to market. The company's VS7000 chipset family is available for sampling to qualified customers for automotive, industrial, medical and machine vision applications.
The interoperability demonstration addresses industry requirements for multi-vendor sourcing to reduce supply chain risk and encourage cost competition, according to the companies' joint statement.
