ICL opens specialty fertilizer plant in India

March 18, 2026 6:05 AM EDT

ICL Group (NYSE: ICL) announced the opening of a specialty fertilizer production facility in Maharashtra, India. The plant will manufacture Water Soluble Fertilizers locally to serve the Indian market, which has demonstrated high single-digit compound annual growth rates according to the company's statement based on customs import data.

The facility spans approximately seven acres and replicates ICL's production model currently operating in Israel. The plant is designed to produce advanced Water Soluble Fertilizer solutions for precise nutrient delivery in agricultural applications.

India relies heavily on fertilizer imports and faces supply disruptions due to geopolitical tensions affecting global shipping routes, including the Strait of Hormuz corridor. The new facility supports the Government of India's "Make in India" initiative by establishing local production capacity.

"Establishing this manufacturing plant in India is a strategic step in scaling our specialty fertilizer production platform," said Nir Ilani, President of the Growing Solutions Division of ICL. "With geopolitical tensions disrupting global trade routes and delaying fertilizer shipments through a key corridor such as the Strait of Hormuz, building local production capacity is essential."

ICL has operated in India for more than three decades and generates approximately $250 million in annual revenues from the market. The company reported total revenues of more than $7 billion in 2025.

The investment aligns with ICL's strategy to expand specialty fertilizer production in high-growth markets and reduce dependence on cross-border supply chains. ICL operates through four business segments: Industrial Products, Potash, Phosphate Solutions and Growing Solutions.
