Humacyte receives DoD funding for bioengineered blood vessel procurement

Humacyte Inc. (NASDAQ: HUMA) announced that the fiscal year 2026 U.S. Department of Defense Appropriations Act includes dedicated funding to support evaluation and incorporation of biologic vascular repair technologies for military personnel with traumatic vascular injuries.

The FY2026 National Defense Authorization Act, enacted in December 2025, stated that DoD should integrate FDA-approved breakthrough vascular repair technologies in traumatic extremity arterial injury repair, providing an off-the-shelf, biologically active vascular conduit when autologous vein harvesting is not feasible.

Humacyte's Symvess is the only human-derived bioengineered blood vessel approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. The product received FDA approval in December 2024 for use as a vascular conduit for extremity arterial injury when urgent revascularization is needed to avoid imminent limb loss and autologous vein graft is not feasible.

Niklason noted that Symvess has been tested on the battlefield in Ukraine as part of a humanitarian program. A retrospective, observational study of 16 patients from this program showed 100% survival, zero amputations and zero conduit infections despite serious wartime injuries, according to the company.

The Durham, North Carolina-based company develops bioengineered human tissues and is currently conducting late-stage clinical trials for other vascular applications, including arteriovenous access for hemodialysis and peripheral artery disease.
