Honeywell launches biomass-to-fuel conversion technology

Honeywell (NASDAQ: HON) announced the introduction of its Biocrude Upgrading process technology, which converts agricultural and forestry waste into renewable fuels including marine fuel, gasoline and sustainable aviation fuel.

The technology processes biomass sources such as wood chips and crop residues into ready-to-use fuels for sectors including maritime transportation. The company stated the process can convert plant and agricultural waste into biocrude at feedstock collection sites, then refine it at major facilities to produce various fuel types.

"The maritime industry has a real need for renewable fuels that are immediately available and cost effective," said Ken West, president of Honeywell Energy and Sustainability Solutions. "Our Biocrude Upgrading processing technology can be delivered in modular form, offering savings from the point of installation through to refining and use."

The technology can be delivered as prefabricated modular plants, which the company says reduces project timelines and construction complexity. For ship operators, these fuels serve as alternatives to traditional heavy fuel oil without requiring engine modifications.

Honeywell reports that heavy fuel oil has been the primary energy source for the maritime sector since the 1960s and contributes to the industry's approximately 3% share of global greenhouse gas emissions, according to the U.S. Department of Energy.

The Biocrude Upgrading technology joins Honeywell's existing renewable fuels portfolio, which includes Ecofining, Ethanol to Jet technology, Fischer-Tropsch Unicracking technology and UOP eFining. The company has provided process technologies for renewable and alternative fuels for more than a decade.
