GlobalFoundries launches 22FDX+ RRAM memory technology for AI and wireless

August 28, 2025 8:11 AM EDT

GlobalFoundries (NASDAQ: GFS) announced the availability of its 22FDX+ with Resistive RAM technology for prototyping at its annual Technology Summit in California. The semiconductor manufacturer said the new RRAM technology combines with its 22FDX platform to provide embedded non-volatile memory for wireless microcontrollers and AI IoT applications.

The company stated the embedded RRAM offers memory solutions with low power consumption for read and write operations, high endurance, and data retention capabilities. The technology integrates on-chip with GlobalFoundries' 22FDX platform to create system-on-chip solutions for connected devices including sensors, wearables, and industrial systems.

According to the announcement, the RRAM technology enables weight storage for neural networks and supports AI-enabled IoT devices that require edge computing capabilities. The high density and scalability features target applications in intelligent, connected devices.

"Our latest solution offers a compelling combination of density, performance and power efficiency, making it well-suited to tackle the challenges of next-generation, AI-enabled and connected devices," said Ed Kaste, senior vice president of GlobalFoundries' ultra-low power CMOS product line.

Nordic Semiconductor expressed support for the technology launch. "We welcome GF's introduction of embedded RRAM as a significant advancement that enables secure, scalable, and power-efficient edge intelligence," said Oyvind Strom, executive vice president of Short-Range at Nordic Semiconductor.

GlobalFoundries made a macro preliminary design kit for the 22FDX+ RRAM available through its GF Connect portal. The company plans volume production for 2026, driven by customer engagements. Development of future RRAM technology generations and deployments to other platforms is underway.
