Broadcom achieves one million flap-free hours with co-packaged optics

Broadcom Inc. (NASDAQ: AVGO) reported achieving one million cumulative 400G equivalent port device hours of flap-free co-packaged optics operation at Meta, according to a company statement.

The testing demonstrated no link flaps, which are brief connectivity disruptions that serve as a reliability metric in data center networks. The testing occurred in Meta's high-temperature lab characterization environment.

Co-packaged optics technology integrates optical engines with switch silicon to provide bandwidth density and power efficiency for data center architectures. According to Broadcom's data, the technology reduces optics power by 65 percent compared to pluggable module solutions.

"Achieving one million link flap-free hours is a strong validation of Broadcom's commitment to quality and innovation," said Near Margalit, vice president and general manager of Broadcom's Optical Systems Division. "This milestone shows that CPO is not just a research concept — it is production-proven and ready to scale."

The company's co-packaged optics platform includes thermal management systems, optical engine packaging with monitoring capabilities, firmware and link diagnostics, and validation across electrical, optical, and mechanical domains.

Broadcom stated that as hyperscale data centers move beyond 51.2 Tb/s switch bandwidth, co-packaged optics addresses power constraints and physical limitations of traditional pluggable optics.

The results were presented at ECOC 2025 in a paper titled "Co-Packaged Optics Technology Evaluation for Hyperscale Data Center Fabric Switches" by Siamak Amiralizadeh.
