Boeing (BA) Slips After Being Told by FAA to Fix New Manufacturing Problem Found on Undelivered 787 Dreamliners Before Resuming Deliveries

July 13, 2021 6:18 AM EDT

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said that it asked Boeing (NYSE: BA) to work on fixing the production deficit on its 787 Dreamliner planes before delivering these to customers.

The FAA says a new problem was found “near the nose” on planes that Boeing hasn’t still delivered.

“This issue was discovered as part of the ongoing system-wide inspection of Boeing’s 787 shimming processes required by the FAA,” the agency said.

“Although the issue poses no immediate threat to flight safety, Boeing has committed to fix these airplanes before resuming deliveries.”

Boeing earlier paused deliveries of 787 Dreamliners for the second time. It now has about 100 787 Dreamliners that haven’t yet been delivered.

“Based on data, the FAA will determine whether similar modifications should be made on 787s already in commercial service,” the FAA added.

In June, Boeing’s Chief Executive Dave Calhoun commented that 787 Dreamliners were "performing beautifully."

"The FAA rightfully wants to know more about the analytics and process controls that we put in place, which are different than the ones that we had previously, so that we could be more perfect,” he commented.

Shares of Boeing are down about 1% in pre-open Tuesday.
