Arvinas Inc. (NASDAQ: ARVN) announced that Chief Executive Officer John Houston will retire from his position following the appointment of a successor. Houston will remain as chairperson of the board of directors after stepping down as CEO and president.

The biotechnology company's board of directors has initiated a search for Houston's replacement. Houston joined Arvinas in January 2017 as president of research and development and chief scientific officer before being appointed CEO in September 2017. He was named chairperson in 2023.

During Houston's tenure as CEO, Arvinas moved six programs into clinical trials and reported results from what the company describes as the first positive pivotal Phase 3 trial for a PROTAC, a type of protein degradation therapy. The company also reported that an orally administered PROTAC achieved pharmacodynamic activity in the central nervous system.

"It has been an honor to lead Arvinas alongside incredibly talented colleagues and a supportive Board of Directors," Houston said in a statement. "I look forward to remaining a part of Arvinas as Chairperson and I'm confident in the Company's ability to improve the lives of patients with serious diseases through our revolutionary PROTAC protein degradation platform."

Briggs Morrison, a board member and lead independent director, said Houston guided the company through industry milestones for PROTACs, including the first to enter clinical trials and the first new drug application.

Arvinas develops treatments based on targeted protein degradation and has multiple investigational drugs in clinical development programs, including treatments for breast cancer, non-Hodgkin lymphoma, neurodegenerative disorders, and various cancers.
