ArcBest (NASDAQ: ARCB) purchased two Tesla Semi electric trucks for its ABF Freight unit, expanding testing beyond a pilot program completed in 2025, the company announced.

The Class 8 electric trucks will support linehaul operations primarily within California, with planned extension into Reno, Nevada. This deployment expands beyond the 2025 pilot, which focused on the Reno-Sacramento corridor.

"Our 2025 pilot gave us valuable insight into how electric Class 8 equipment can perform in real-world LTL operations," said Matt Godfrey, ABF Freight president. "Adding Tesla Semis to our lineup allows us to expand that across more lanes and operating conditions."

During the pilot program, the Tesla Semi achieved an average energy efficiency of approximately 1.55 kWh per mile. Drivers provided positive feedback, highlighting visibility, comfort and performance capabilities, including operation on demanding routes such as the climb over Donner Pass.

ABF Freight plans to evaluate the electric trucks against its diesel fleet using metrics including total cost of ownership, operational efficiency, safety and employee experience. The company will assess performance over a longer period and broader operating footprint before making additional investment decisions.

ArcBest operates as an integrated logistics company with 14,000 employees across 250 locations. The Fort Smith, Arkansas-based company was founded in 1923 and provides ground, air and ocean transportation services along with supply chain management solutions.
