Snowflake Inc. (NYSE: SNOW) announced the Open Semantic Interchange initiative, partnering with Salesforce, dbt Labs, RelationalAI, and BlackRock to create a vendor-neutral semantic data framework for artificial intelligence applications.
The open source initiative aims to standardize fragmented data definitions across platforms and tools. The coalition includes technology companies Alation, Atlan, Blue Yonder, Cube, Elementum AI, Hex, Honeydew, Mistral AI, Omni, Select Star, Sigma, and ThoughtSpot.
The initiative addresses inconsistent business metrics and metadata interpretation across different tools, which the companies say creates barriers to AI adoption. The framework establishes a common specification for how semantic metadata is defined and shared across platforms.
"At Snowflake, we've long believed that interoperability and open standards are essential to unlocking the full potential of AI with your data," said Christian Kleinerman, executive vice president of product at Snowflake.
The initiative targets three areas: enhancing interoperability across tools and platforms, accelerating adoption of AI and business intelligence applications, and reducing operational complexity for data teams.
"The future of AI depends on trust—and trust starts with consistent, reliable data," said Southard Jones, chief product officer at Tableau. "By co-leading the Open Semantic Interchange with Snowflake and our partners, we're building the foundation every AI agent and BI application needs."
BlackRock's global head of Aladdin Data, Diwakar Goel, said the financial services firm sees the initiative as a way to enhance data interoperability. "We are excited to be part of the Open Semantic Interchange to help establish a common, vendor-neutral specification that will not only streamline data exchange but also accelerate the adoption of AI and business intelligence applications across the financial industry," he said.
The information is based on a company press release.
