Rockwell Automation Inc. (NYSE: ROK) announced the integration of NVIDIA Nemotron Nano, a small language model optimized for industrial automation workflows, according to a company statement released November 13.
The Milwaukee-based industrial automation company is incorporating the open-source Nemotron-Nano-9B-v2 model into its FactoryTalk Design Studio platform and other product workflows. The model operates on human-machine interface panels, appliances, desktop integrated development environments, and server or private cloud environments.
The AI model supports both edge and air-gapped deployments, designed for industrial environments where data security and offline operation are required. Rockwell fine-tuned the model using data from FactoryTalk Design Studio Copilot.
"Industrial automation demands AI that works reliably at the edge and in secure environments," said Tony Carrara, FactoryTalk Design Studio business manager at Rockwell Automation. "By fine-tuning the open NVIDIA Nemotron model with FactoryTalk Design Studio data, we're creating solutions that can be deployed anywhere to help our customers accelerate workflows without compromising predictability or control."
Joey Conway, senior director of generative AI software for enterprise at NVIDIA, stated that small language models bring real-time intelligence to factory floors and power grids, allowing enterprises to deploy AI in environments with limited space and power.
The technology will be demonstrated at Automation Fair 2025, scheduled for November 17-20 in Chicago. Rockwell Automation employs approximately 26,000 people across more than 100 countries as of fiscal year end 2025.
