Revvity Inc. (NYSE: RVTY) announced a collaboration with Sanofi (NASDAQ: SNY) to develop a population-scale assay for early detection of type 1 diabetes. The partnership will support clinical validation and regulatory submissions of a new T1D 4-plex in vitro diagnostic assay based on Revvity's existing research-use 3-plex assay.
The new assay will run on Revvity's GSP instrument using capillary dried blood spot and venous specimens. The instrument's high throughput capability is designed to enable population-level screening for early-stage type 1 diabetes in clinical practice. Regulatory submissions are planned for the U.S. FDA, IVDR and other jurisdictions.
Type 1 diabetes affects over 9 million people worldwide, with more than 500,000 new cases diagnosed annually. According to the press release, 90% of new cases occur without a family history. The autoimmune condition occurs when the immune system attacks insulin-producing beta cells in the pancreas.
"The expansion of autoantibody testing from research-use towards convenient, affordable, high-quality and high-throughput commercial platforms such as Revvity GSP may accelerate the transition to a new clinical standard of care where people with T1D are diagnosed as early as possible," said Shirley Gil Parrado, global head of autoimmune type 1 diabetes at Sanofi.
The companies will also collaborate to expand access to Revvity's existing research-use product. Currently offered as a laboratory-developed test at Revvity Omics laboratory in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Revvity plans to validate the assay in additional locations across its global laboratory network.
Revvity reported 2024 revenue of more than $2.7 billion and employs approximately 11,000 people. The company serves customers in pharmaceutical, biotech, diagnostic labs, academia and government sectors across more than 160 countries.
