QUALCOMM and BMW Group launch automated driving system for new iX3

Qualcomm Technologies Inc. (NASDAQ: QCOM) and BMW Group introduced Snapdragon Ride Pilot, an automated driving system developed through a three-year collaboration. The system debuts in BMW's new iX3 vehicle, part of the company's Neue Klasse lineup.

The system operates on Qualcomm's Snapdragon Ride system-on-chips and includes a jointly developed software stack. It supports driving automation levels from basic safety functions to Level 2+ highway and urban navigation capabilities.

BMW's iX3 automated driving features include contextual lane changes triggered by driver cues such as mirror glances, hands-free highway driving on approved roads, and AI-powered parking assistance. The system uses high-definition cameras and radar sensors for 360-degree coverage.

The technology has been validated in 60 countries and is targeted for availability in more than 100 countries by 2026. Qualcomm now offers Snapdragon Ride Pilot to global automakers and Tier-1 suppliers.

The software stack includes 360-degree perception using camera-based vision for object detection and lane recognition, safety measures complying with automotive safety standards, and context-aware driving that combines rule-based and AI models for behavior prediction.

Development involved over 1,400 specialists across multiple locations including Germany, the United States, Sweden, Romania and BMW's testing center in the Czech Republic. The system supports over-the-air updates and uses fleet data for continuous improvement.

BMW's central computer system, powered by Snapdragon Ride chips, provides 20 times higher computing power than the previous generation. The iX3 also includes Qualcomm's V2X 200 chipset for vehicle-to-everything communications.
