NUBURU signs alliance with SunCubes for laser defense systems

June 4, 2026 6:31 AM EDT

NUBURU Inc. (NYSE American: BURU) announced it signed a binding head of terms with Italian company SunCubes S.r.l. to develop laser-based defense systems targeting counter-drone and directed-energy markets.

Under the agreement, NUBURU plans to invest up to €1.0 million in SunCubes through staged payments. The investment includes an initial €250,000 upon execution of definitive agreements and an additional €750,000 following regulatory clearances. The payments are structured as advances toward a future SunCubes capital increase.

NUBURU intends to implement the partnership through its Italian subsidiary Lyocon S.r.l., which the company acquired in January 2026. The collaboration aims to combine Lyocon's laser manufacturing capabilities with SunCubes' beam-control and optical power transmission technologies.

The partnership plans to develop multiple laser-based systems including portable laser interdiction systems for rifles and drones, vehicle-mounted laser systems, and wireless charging technology for surveillance equipment. The companies also plan to create laser-based communication systems for secure data transmission.

SunCubes specializes in laser-based wireless power transmission, beam control, and optical power management technologies. The Italian company develops safety systems for wireless laser energy transmission and tracking systems for static and moving targets.

The transaction remains subject to negotiation of definitive agreements, Golden Power clearance, export-control approvals, and other regulatory requirements. NUBURU expects to establish a Milan research and development hub focused on optical engineering and beam-control development as part of the collaboration.

Market research cited by NUBURU estimates the global anti-drone market will grow from $4.48 billion in 2025 to $14.51 billion by 2030, according to MarketsandMarkets. The directed-energy counter-drone segment is projected to grow from $1.6 billion in 2025 to $6.8 billion by 2035, according to Global Market Insights.
