LegalZoom adds provisional patent filing services through law firm

LegalZoom.com, Inc. (NASDAQ: LZ) announced it has expanded its intellectual property legal services to include provisional patent application filings through its law firm, LZ Legal Services. The online legal services platform now offers attorney-assisted provisional patent services alongside its existing trademark registration offerings.

The company's basic self-guided patent package costs $299, while premium attorney-assisted patent services start at $999. LegalZoom stated that traditional law firms charge an average of $5,500 or more for provisional patent application filings.

The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office granted 368,597 patents in the period from December 1, 2023, to November 30, 2024, representing 5.7% growth, according to the company's press release.

"We aim to make it as easy and affordable for inventors and businesses to take the critical step of protecting their intellectual property, with the guidance of LZ Legal Services' experienced lawyers at their side," said Nicole Miller, Chief Legal Officer at LegalZoom.

The provisional patent filing services are staffed by USPTO-registered patent attorneys and agents. Customers can add comprehensive patent searches conducted by patent professionals and custom professional drawings to illustrate inventions.

LZ Legal Services is an Arizona-based law firm owned and operated by LegalZoom. The provisional patent service allows inventors and businesses to obtain "patent pending" status while providing time to develop inventions before filing non-provisional utility patents.
