Impinj expands RFID technology with new anti-fraud and tag selection tools

Impinj Inc. (NASDAQ: PI) announced new Gen2X innovations designed to address enterprise challenges including counterfeit items, unwanted tag reads, and tag selection in retail and industrial environments.

The company unveiled three key capabilities at its Gen2X Solutions Developers Conference 2025. Endpoint IC Verification allows RAIN readers to verify authentic Impinj endpoint chips during normal inventory operations, replacing existing EPC-TID verification methods. Gen2X Fast Reinventory reduces stray tag reads when combined with read-zone-confinement techniques. Gen2X Tag Selection enables readers to specify which tags should respond during inventory.

Impinj added Gen2X support to its M770, M775, M780 and M781 endpoint integrated circuits, which are designed for applications requiring larger memory capacity. These chips target logistics, manufacturing, automotive and healthcare sectors. The company also implemented mechanical and process enhancements to improve manufacturability and reliability for industrial applications.

The new features are available in M800 series endpoint ICs, R700 reader firmware, and E Family reader IC firmware and software tools. Gen2X Fast Reinventory has limited availability, with general release planned for mid-2026.

Impinj released Gen2X in December 2024 as a standards-compatible enhancement to industry radio protocols. The technology aims to speed inventory processes, improve reader sensitivity and range, and reduce solution costs.

Partner companies including Tageos, Beontag, Checkpoint Systems and Keonn Technologies expressed support for the expanded Gen2X capabilities in their respective product lines and applications.
