CF Industries and POET launch low-carbon fertilizer pilot with co-ops

CF Industries Holdings Inc. (NYSE: CF) and POET have launched a pilot project with agricultural cooperatives to develop a low-carbon fertilizer supply chain aimed at reducing the carbon intensity of ethanol production.

The pilot includes WinField United, the crop inputs business of Land O'Lakes Inc., along with agricultural cooperatives NuWay-K&H, New Cooperative, and Farmer's Cooperative. Participants will track carbon intensity certification of low-carbon fertilizer produced by CF Industries through distribution channels to corn growers across Iowa, Minnesota, Missouri, and Nebraska.

POET facilities will utilize corn produced with the lower carbon intensity fertilizer for ethanol production in Minnesota, Iowa, and Nebraska. The consortium completed its first distribution and application of low-carbon ammonia fertilizer in fall 2025, according to the press release.

POET expects to use the corn grown with low-carbon ammonia to produce an estimated 5-6 million gallons of ethanol with lower carbon intensity.

CF Industries produces low-carbon ammonia at its Donaldsonville Complex by capturing carbon dioxide emissions from the ammonia production process and storing it underground. At full capacity, the facility can produce up to 1.9 million tons of low-carbon ammonia annually, which can meet fertilizer requirements for up to 19-22 million acres of planted corn.

"Fertilizers manufactured with a lower carbon intensity provide a quantifiable and certifiable method of decarbonizing bioethanol inputs," said Bert Frost, executive vice president and chief commercial officer at CF Industries.

Christian McIlvain, President of POET Grain, stated the trial provides an additional pathway to reduce the carbon intensity of bioethanol while delivering environmental and economic benefits for rural communities.
