Broadcom launches BroadPeak chip for 5G and 6G wireless networks

Broadcom Inc. (NASDAQ: AVGO) announced the launch of BroadPeak, a radio digital front-end system-on-chip device for 5G massive MIMO and remote radio head applications. The company stated the chip also supports next-generation 5G Advanced and 6G wireless infrastructure.

The BroadPeak BCM85021 features 5nm CMOS technology and operates across frequencies from 400 MHz to 8.5 GHz. Broadcom claims the device delivers up to 40% power reduction compared to existing solutions for massive MIMO and remote radio heads.

The chip includes integrated digital predistortion, carrier aggregation, crest factor reduction, and antenna front-end capabilities. Technical specifications include ADC/DAC sampling rates up to 19.6 GS/s and support for instantaneous bandwidth up to 860 MHz.

Broadcom positions the product as meeting technical requirements for the upcoming 5G Advanced standard using the n104 band from 6.425 to 7.125 GHz, as well as 6G standard requirements using the upper mid-band from 7 to 8.5 GHz.

"With 5G New Radio expanding into the 6 GHz spectrum and above to fuel the surge of AI and data-heavy applications, the infrastructure behind it must evolve," said Vijay Janapaty, vice president and general manager of Broadcom's Physical Layer Products Division.

The company has begun shipping samples to early access customers and partners. Broadcom collaborated with Altera on interoperability testing between Altera Agilex 7 FPGAs and the BroadPeak chips. Hitachi GlobalLogic co-developed software development kit components for the product.
