TTC Electrical and Trades Workers Issue Strike Deadline
TORONTO--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Approximately 700 electrical and trades workers employed by the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) are ready to take strike action. The workers, represented by CUPE 2, have been without a contract since April 2022.
Despite several bargaining sessions since February 2024, discussions have been frustrating. As a result, the workers have set a strike deadline for 12:01 a.m. on April 22, 2024.
“None of us desire a strike, yet we’re left with no choice,” says Sumit Guleria, President of CUPE Local 2. “Our services are critical for public safety and directly impact customer well-being. Fair recognition and treatment of our members’ invaluable contributions are imperative.”
At the core of the issues being negotiated is the demand for a fair wage increase to address the mounting high cost of living. The workers are advocating for a raise to ensure their earnings remain in step with the surging inflation rates.
“We prioritize safety at every level within the TTC to ensure everyone can commute safely,” says Guleria. “It’s crucial that we never compromise on the quality of our work by cutting corners.”
CUPE Local 2 remains steadfast in its commitment to achieving a mutually beneficial resolution. Nevertheless, the workers are prepared to strike in order to secure fair treatment and compensation.
About:
CUPE 2 represents approximately 700 communications, electrical, and signal workers responsible for the safe functioning of the TTC. For more than a decade, TTC workers were designated as an essential service, akin to firefighters or police, and were deprived of the right to strike. However, a landmark decision last summer overturned that designation, restoring to TTC workers the same rights as all other public transit workers in the country.
