Frontline Community Mental Health and Addictions Workers Call on Minister Elliott for Mission Critical Support

April 12, 2021 4:55 PM EDT

TORONTO--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Frontline community mental health and addictions workers at CUPE Local 4891, Regeneration Community Services, warn that the Ford government must do more to support those experiencing mental health concerns and addictions during the COVID-19 pandemic.

In a media conference to be held on Wednesday, April 14, frontline workers will explain the impacts that underfunding has on clients who are experiencing isolation, aren’t able to access life-saving programming and supports and continue to linger on rapidly expanding waitlists for mental health and addictions support services. CUPE invites members of the media to hear stories from CUPE Ontario President, Fred Hahn and community mental health and addictions at Regeneration Community Services.

CUPE has called on Minister Christine Elliott and the Ford government to urgently act to address serious issues experienced by frontline community mental health and addictions workers and the people they support. Workers are reporting critical short staffing, chronic issues with staff recruitment and retention, and increased instances of employee burnout as a result of being overworked—all of which have compromised service delivery. CUPE Local 4891 is currently in bargaining with the employer and is focused on improving services for clients and ensuring that supports remain high-quality and accessible. Regeneration Community Services is proposing a three-year wage and benefit freeze which could force workers to strike.
