Hyatt Hotels Corporation (NYSE: H) announced that Thomas J. Pritzker will retire as executive chairman effective immediately and will not seek re-election to the board at the company's annual meeting in May.
The board appointed Mark S. Hoplamazian, currently president and chief executive officer, to succeed Pritzker as chairman while retaining his CEO role.
Pritzker served as a board member and executive chairman since August 2004 and held senior executive and chairman responsibilities for predecessor entities starting in 1980. During his tenure, Hyatt expanded its global brand presence and strengthened its asset-light business model.
"Tom's leadership has been instrumental in shaping Hyatt's strategy and long-term growth," said Richard Tuttle, chair of the board's nominating and corporate governance committee. The board engaged in succession planning and expressed confidence in Hoplamazian's qualifications based on his business knowledge and nearly two decades as CEO.
Pritzker stated that serving Hyatt "has been both an honor and one of the great experiences of my life." He expressed confidence in the leadership team and board's ability to continue building on the company's foundation.
Hoplamazian said he was honored by the board's confidence and emphasized the company's focus on executing its long-term growth strategy while delivering value to stakeholders.
As of December 31, 2025, Chicago-based Hyatt's portfolio included more than 1,500 hotels and all-inclusive properties in 83 countries across six continents, according to the press release.
