Candel Therapeutics adds CAR-T pioneer Carl June to advisory board

Candel Therapeutics Inc. (NASDAQ: CADL) announced the appointment of Carl H. June, M.D., to its Research Advisory Board. June is recognized for developing the first FDA-approved CAR-T cell therapy and serves as the Richard W. Vague Professor in Immunotherapy at the University of Pennsylvania's Perelman School of Medicine.

June also directs the Center for Cellular Immunotherapies and the Parker Institute for Cancer Immunotherapy at the university. His research focuses on lymphocyte activation mechanisms related to immune tolerance and adoptive immunotherapy for cancer and chronic infection.

The clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company develops viral immunotherapies for cancer treatment. Candel's lead candidate CAN-2409 recently completed phase 2a trials in non-small cell lung cancer and pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma, plus a phase 3 trial in localized prostate cancer conducted under an FDA Special Protocol Assessment.

CAN-2409 has received Fast Track Designation from the FDA for treating pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma, stage III/IV non-small cell lung cancer in specific patient populations, and localized primary prostate cancer when combined with radiation therapy. The FDA also granted the therapy Regenerative Medicine Advanced Therapy Designation for newly diagnosed localized prostate cancer in intermediate-to-high-risk patients.

Paul Peter Tak, Candel's president and CEO, stated the company expects to submit a Biologics License Application for CAN-2409 in prostate cancer during the fourth quarter of 2026.

The company's second platform candidate, CAN-3110, is in a phase 1b trial for recurrent high-grade glioma and has received Fast Track and Orphan Drug designations from the FDA.

June will receive compensation for his advisory board role, according to the company's statement.
