BigBear.ai (NYSE: BBAI), a defense and security technology company based in McLean, Virginia, has appointed retired U.S. Army Lt. Gen. Sean A. Gainey to its Board of Directors, effective August 13, 2026, according to a press release.
Gainey concluded a 36-year Army career that included serving as the first director of the Department of Defense's Joint Counter-small Unmanned Aircraft Systems Office, a position he assumed in 2020. At that time, the military services operated approximately 40 separate counter-drone systems without a common joint architecture. During his four-year tenure, the office developed the department's first counter-drone strategy, joint doctrine, training standards, and an open command-and-control architecture. The Joint C-sUAS University also opened at Fort Sill during this period.
In his final Army assignment, Gainey commanded U.S. Army Space and Missile Defense Command and, in January 2026, assumed command of Joint Task Force-Gold, a U.S. Northern Command task force established to integrate and synchronize homeland air and missile defense and serve as the operational arm for the Golden Dome layered defense system.
"General Gainey's experience, expertise and operational insights make him a very valuable addition to the BigBear.ai Board," said Peter Cannito, Chair of the Board of Directors. "Few leaders have his firsthand understanding of how a complex defense architecture becomes a fielded, trusted capability."
"There is no doubt that the speed and complexity of today's threats are outpacing our ability to process information manually," Gainey said. "BigBear.ai's technology directly addresses that challenge."
Gainey holds degrees from Georgia Southern University, Central Michigan University, and the Dwight D. Eisenhower School for National Security and Resource Strategy. His military decorations include the Defense Superior Service Medal, the Legion of Merit, the Bronze Star Medal, and the Meritorious Service Medal.
