Absci (NASDAQ: ABSI) announced Monday the appointment of Mary Szela to its board of directors. Szela brings three decades of biopharmaceutical experience, including her role in leading the U.S. launch and global expansion of Humira during her tenure at Abbott Laboratories.
Szela currently serves as chief executive officer, president, and director of TriSalus Life Sciences. She has previously served on the boards of Prometheus Biosciences, which Merck acquired for $10.8 billion, Kura Oncology, and Novo Nordisk. She holds a bachelor's degree in nursing and an MBA from the University of Illinois at Chicago.
"Mary has been a driving force behind the development of one of the most successful therapies in the industry, bringing a rare and invaluable breadth of experience—from accelerating early-stage clinical programs to leading the commercialization of blockbuster treatments like Humira," said Sean McClain, founder and CEO of Absci.
The appointment comes as Absci advances its pipeline of AI-designed biologics. The company expects Phase 1 interim data for ABS-101, an anti-TL1A antibody for inflammatory bowel disease treatment, later this year. ABS-201, an anti-prolactin receptor antibody for androgenetic alopecia treatment, is anticipated to enter clinical trials in early 2026.
Absci operates as a clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company that uses generative AI to design therapeutics. The Vancouver, Washington-based company maintains an AI research lab in New York City and an innovation center in Switzerland.
