Xylem Inc. (NYSE: XYL) and Amazon.com Inc. (NASDAQ: AMZN) announced a partnership to deploy smart water technology in Mexico City and Monterrey aimed at saving more than 1.3 billion liters of water annually.
The initiative involves implementing Xylem Vue, a software platform that uses data analytics to detect leaks and reduce water losses. The project is projected to save approximately 800 million liters per year in Mexico City and 560 million liters annually in Monterrey.
Mexico City's municipal water system serves 9 million residents and currently loses up to 40% of water through pipe leaks before reaching consumers. The technology will manage pressure in real time and proactively locate leaks to enable faster repairs.
In Monterrey, the project expands an existing Xylem Vue deployment to two additional districts, including one serving low-income residents. The expansion includes advanced leak detection capabilities.
"In a water-stressed region, where every liter counts, recovering more than a billion liters of water each year is a game-changer," said Jaime Barba, General Manager of Xylem Vue.
The partnership forms part of Amazon's broader water stewardship program, which includes more than 30 global water replenishment projects expected to return over 14 billion liters of water annually once completed.
A report from Xylem and Global Water Intelligence indicated that smart water systems can reduce urban drought resilience costs by up to 20%. Xylem reported revenue of $8.6 billion in 2024 and employs approximately 23,000 people globally.
