Western Union's Intermex deal gets NY approval, California suspended

August 14, 2026 12:12 AM EDT

Western Union (NYSE: WU) and International Money Express, Inc. (NASDAQ: IMXI), known as Intermex, announced on Aug. 14, 2026 that they have received regulatory approval from the New York State Department of Financial Services for Western Union's pending acquisition of Intermex.

As part of that approval, Western Union made certain commitments to the agency regarding remittance services and locations in New York following the close of the deal.

On Aug. 13, 2026, the California Department of Financial Protection and Innovation sent a letter suspending an approval extension it had previously granted on July 31, 2026 for the same transaction. The DFPI stated the suspension is "based on a need to further review the transaction as a result of the intervening six months since approval was originally granted, and to further examine the impact of the proposal on operations in this state."

Both companies said they intend to engage promptly with the DFPI to address its questions and seek reinstatement of the approval. The companies stated they remain committed to completing the transaction and plan to close promptly after the DFPI approval is reinstated, subject to satisfaction or waiver of remaining customary closing conditions.
