WISeKey International Holding Ltd (NASDAQ: WKEY) announced plans to launch a satellite in the fourth quarter of 2025 that will enable blockchain transactions from space through its SEALCOIN platform.
The Geneva-based cybersecurity and IoT company said its subsidiary SEALCOIN AG will deploy a Low Earth Orbit satellite supporting what it describes as the first satellite-enabled blockchain transaction using SEALCOIN tokens.
The system allows remote IoT devices without terrestrial connectivity to create blockchain transactions by signing them through onboard secure elements. These transactions are transmitted via the WISeSat constellation to connected devices that validate and submit them to the Hedera blockchain network.
The process involves four steps: an off-grid device creates a signed transaction, sends it via satellite to a connected peer device, which validates and submits it to the blockchain, then transmits requested data back through the satellite network.
"Our goal with SEALCOIN has always been to make transactional IoT borderless, scalable, and secure," said Carlos Moreira, CEO of WISeKey Group. "With this milestone, we've expanded that vision into space, opening the door to solutions for regions with no cellular or terrestrial coverage."
WISeKey stated the technology could support applications in agriculture, environmental monitoring, logistics, and defense systems in areas lacking reliable connectivity infrastructure.
The upcoming satellite will feature software-defined radio technology for in-orbit reconfiguration and higher data rate communications. Future phases plan to embed SEALCOIN capabilities directly within satellites using secure element technology.
WISeKey operates through several subsidiaries including SEALSQ Corp (NASDAQ: LAES) for semiconductors, WISeSat AG for space technology, and SEALCOIN AG for decentralized internet applications. The company reports deploying over 1.6 billion microchips across IoT sectors.
