TransAlta Corporation (TSX: TA) (NYSE: TAC) announced it will temporarily mothball Sheerness Unit 1 effective April 1, 2026, for up to two years. Alberta Power (2000) Ltd., a TransAlta subsidiary, provided notice to the Alberta Electric System Operator on December 18, 2025.
The unit will remain operational through the winter season, while Sheerness Unit 2 will continue full service. TransAlta maintains the option to return the mothballed unit to service when market conditions or contracting opportunities improve.
"We have made the prudent financial decision to temporarily mothball Sheerness Unit 1 while reserving it for future economic opportunities," said John Kousinioris, President and Chief Executive Officer. He noted the company remains pleased with progress on its data center strategy and emphasized the decision preserves long-term asset optionality.
TransAlta operates electrical power generation assets across Canada, the United States and Australia. The Calgary-based company produces wind power and thermal generation in Canada, with operations spanning over 114 years.
