Investing.com -- The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced Thursday it has launched an investigation into Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA) regarding potential delays in reporting crashes involving advanced driver assistance systems or self-driving vehicles.
The auto safety regulator identified multiple incident reports submitted by Tesla where crashes were reported several months or more after they occurred. This practice potentially violates NHTSA requirements, which mandate that such reports be submitted within one or five days of Tesla receiving notice of a crash.
The agency described the new probe as an "audit query" aimed at evaluating the cause of these potential reporting delays, determining their scope, and examining what mitigation measures Tesla has developed to address the issue.
NHTSA’s investigation will focus on understanding why these reporting delays occurred and how widespread the problem might be within Tesla’s safety reporting system.
