Tenaya Therapeutics Inc. (NASDAQ: TNYA) announced a research collaboration agreement with Alnylam Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ: ALNY) to discover genetic targets for cardiovascular disease treatments.

Under the agreement, Tenaya will validate up to 15 gene targets over a two-year period. The company will receive up to $10 million in upfront payments plus reimbursement for related costs. Alnylam will handle all development and commercialization activities for therapeutics associated with the identified targets.

Tenaya may receive up to $1.13 billion in development and commercial milestone payments if all genetic targets lead to approved cardiovascular disease therapeutics, according to the press release.

"By combining our modality agnostic target identification and validation capabilities with Alnylam's leadership in RNA interference therapeutics, we have an opportunity to advance candidates for novel genetic targets with the potential to create transformational medicines for patients with heart disease," said Faraz Ali, Chief Executive Officer of Tenaya Therapeutics.

Tenaya's target identification capabilities use human induced pluripotent stem cell-derived cardiomyocytes with high throughput screening, imaging analysis and machine learning algorithms. The company states these capabilities have generated more than 150 genetic targets and contributed to its clinical-stage candidates, including TN-201 and TN-401 gene therapies and TN-301 small molecule.

Tenaya is a clinical-stage biotechnology company developing therapies for heart disease. Its pipeline includes gene therapies for specific types of cardiomyopathy and a small molecule HDAC6 inhibitor for heart failure treatment.
