Soft drinks volume growth hits 6.5% in Western Europe
Investing.com -- Soft drinks volume growth in Western Europe reached 6.5% in the four weeks ending July 12, according to Nielsen data analyzed by Bernstein. The growth rate exceeded June levels and marked an acceleration from flat growth in the four weeks ending May 17.
The report covered carbonated soft drinks, sports and energy drinks, mineral water and fruit juice across the UK, France, Spain, Germany and Italy. Hot weather likely drove the increase, particularly benefiting bottled water and carbonated soft drinks, with strong performance in the UK and France.
On a 12-week trailing basis through July 12, total soft drinks volume growth reached 4.3%. Combined with price-mix growth of 1.2%, total value growth in Western Europe reached 5.5%.
By category, sports and energy drinks posted volume growth of 11.3% on a 12-week basis, while mineral water grew 5.2%. Carbonated soft drinks increased 2.5%, and fruit juice declined 1.8%. Price-mix growth brought value growth to 13.0% for sports and energy drinks, 7.6% for mineral water, 4.6% for carbonated soft drinks and negative 1.1% for fruit juice.
France led country performance with 9.3% volume growth on a 12-week basis, followed by the UK at 5.9%, Germany at 3.9%, Spain at 2.1% and Italy at 0.2%. On a four-week basis, France accelerated to approximately 14% volume growth in July from around 11% previously.
By company, Pepsi volume growth reached 10.2% on a four-week basis, Coca-Cola posted 5.4%, and Monster recorded 17.2%. On a 12-week basis through July 12, value growth was 20.5% for Monster, 8.4% for Pepsi and 3.7% for Coca-Cola.
