SOPHiA GENETICS (NASDAQ: SOPH) announced an expanded collaboration with AstraZeneca (NASDAQ: AZN) to develop an optimized next-generation sequencing solution for detecting breast and prostate cancer mutations, according to a company press release.
The collaboration focuses on the PIK3CA/AKT1/PTEN pathway, a molecular signaling network that regulates cell growth and survival. Disruptions in this pathway are linked to cancer development, including breast and prostate cancers. The companies developed an NGS solution that uses AI algorithms to analyze and detect genomic mutations across the full PTEN gene.
A prototype of the enhanced solution demonstrated improved sensitivity in detecting complex mutations across the pathway, the company stated. SOPHiA GENETICS will implement a Privileged Access Program for selected clinical laboratories specializing in breast and prostate cancer research to validate the technology's sensitivity in real-world settings.
The company expects broader commercial availability in 2026, alongside a multi-center real-world evidence study to test effectiveness. SOPHiA GENETICS plans to use its global network to drive adoption of advanced PIK3CA/AKT1/PTEN testing in both tissue and liquid biopsy applications.
"Partnering with innovative biopharma leaders like AstraZeneca allows us to translate these discoveries into action for breast and prostate cancer patients worldwide," said Ross Muken, President of SOPHiA GENETICS.
The announcement was made at the World CB & CDx Summit in Boston. SOPHiA GENETICS operates a cloud-native platform that analyzes genomic data and generates insights for hospitals, laboratories, and biopharma institutions globally.
