Robinhood Ventures Fund I (NYSE: RVI) purchased approximately $75 million of OpenAI common stock on April 17, 2026, according to a company statement.
Sarah Pinto, President of Robinhood Ventures Fund I, said the investment represents one of the fund's largest investments to date. "OpenAI is one of the frontier artificial intelligence companies, and we are incredibly proud to add them to the Fund," Pinto stated.
The investment aligns with RVI's stated mission to provide retail investors access to private market investments. The fund aims to give individual investors exposure to companies that typically remain private for extended periods before going public.
According to data cited in the announcement, the number of publicly traded companies in the US declined from approximately 7,000 in 2000 to about 4,000 in 2025. The statement noted that as of April 2024, there were more than 6.5 times as many private companies as public companies, with the estimated value of private firms in the US surpassing $10 trillion in the first quarter of 2025.
The investment comes as companies increasingly remain private for longer periods while growing in both number and value, according to the market data referenced in the announcement.
