Rigetti to supply quantum system for NSF-funded PSC testbed

Rigetti Computing (Nasdaq: RGTI) announced it will partner with HPE and the Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center (PSC) to build a hybrid quantum-classical supercomputing testbed called TangleLab, according to a press release issued July 27, 2026.

The project is funded by a $5 million National Science Foundation grant under the Advanced Computing Systems & Services program. Rigetti will deliver a 9-qubit Novera quantum processing unit to PSC, where it will be integrated with a classical high-performance computing system.

Construction is scheduled to begin at PSC's new data center on September 1, 2026, with full operations expected in 2027. PSC will allocate time on the system through a competitive proposal process, with dedicated access for individual researchers and real-time access for educators during classes and workshops. PSC will also provide onboarding, training, and research consulting for users.

"We are excited to have a Novera at the core of TangleLab, which will provide researchers and educators access to a state-of-the-art hybrid quantum-classical computer," said Dr. Subodh Kulkarni, Rigetti's CEO.

Masoud Mohseni, Senior Distinguished Technologist and Director of HPE Quantum at HPE Labs, said HPE's role is to "bring those technologies together into a unified hybrid environment, enabling researchers to develop, benchmark, and optimize quantum-classical workflows."

The TangleLab project builds on an existing collaboration between Rigetti and HPE to develop quantum-enabled high-performance computing systems. The NSF award number is 2537076, and the project aligns with national priorities outlined in Office of Science and Technology Policy memorandum M-25-34/NSTM-2 for fiscal year 2027.
