Quantum BioPharma reaches halfway point in imaging study with MGH

May 18, 2026 5:08 AM EDT

Quantum BioPharma Ltd. (NASDAQ: QNTM) announced that patient enrollment has reached the midpoint in its collaborative imaging study with Massachusetts General Hospital. The study aims to validate a positron emission tomography imaging technique for assessing demyelinated neurons in multiple sclerosis patients.

The research centers on the PET tracer [¹⁸F]3F4AP, developed by Pedro Brugarolas from MGH's Department of Radiology and Harvard Medical School. Early data from the first cohort shows signal detection in acute MS lesions and potential sensitivity to gray matter lesions using PET/MR and total-body PET platforms.

The imaging technique is designed to directly measure demyelinated lesions with intact axons and track demyelination progression. If validated, the approach could enhance evaluation of treatments targeting myelin preservation and regeneration, including Quantum's investigational drug Lucid-MS.

"We are excited to reach this important midpoint in our study with MGH and encouraged by the strength of the preliminary imaging data," said Dr. Andrzej Chruscinski, Vice-President, Scientific and Clinical Affairs at Quantum BioPharma.

Dr. Brugarolas noted that "the ability to directly quantify demyelinated lesions with intact axons in vivo represents an important unmet need in multiple sclerosis research."

Lucid-MS targets protein arginine deiminase 2, an enzyme involved in myelin degradation. The company submitted an IND application to the FDA in March 2026 for a Phase 2 clinical trial. Previous Phase 1 trials showed the drug was well-tolerated in healthy participants.

The Toronto-based biopharmaceutical company focuses on treatments for neurodegenerative and metabolic disorders.
