Olympus partners with Revival Healthcare to develop GI robotics system
Olympus Corporation (TYO: 7733) announced an agreement with Revival Healthcare Capital to co-found Swan EndoSurgical, a company focused on developing robotic systems for gastrointestinal procedures.
The new venture will create endoluminal robotics technology designed to enable physicians to perform minimally invasive procedures within the gastrointestinal tract. The robotic system aims to provide flexible arms that can maneuver within the GI tract for treating lesions and tumors.
"This partnership marks a significant milestone in our strategic initiative to advance endoluminal robotics," said Bob White, President and Chief Executive Officer at Olympus. "We are excited to enter this collaboration that we expect to play a pivotal role in reshaping the GI market by expanding procedural capabilities for physicians."
Traditional endoscopic procedures involve inserting flexible cameras and instruments through existing body openings for diagnosis and treatment. The companies stated that current manual endoscopes have limitations that make advanced procedures within the GI tract challenging and not widely available.
Swan EndoSurgical will be headquartered in the United States and has assembled a leadership team to oversee technical, clinical, and commercial development of the robotic platform. The technology may have applications beyond gastrointestinal procedures, according to the announcement.
Revival Healthcare Capital specializes in medical technology investments and partnerships. Olympus, a global medical technology company, has operated for more than 100 years providing diagnostic and treatment solutions.
The information is based on a press release statement from the companies.
