Mitsubishi Electric wins JAXA subsidy for digital satellite payload
Mitsubishi Electric Corporation (Tokyo: 6503) has been awarded a subsidy under the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency's (JAXA) Space Strategy Fund to develop a full digital payload for communication satellites, according to a company statement.
The subsidy falls under the Development and Demonstration of Technologies for Internationally Competitive Communications Payloads program, financed by the second phase of JAXA's Space Strategy Fund. Mitsubishi Electric had previously been selected as a representative organization for the project.
The company said it aims to develop a full digital payload that offers communication flexibility and high security. Digital communications payloads use digital signal processing technology and software updates to respond to fluctuations in satellite communication demand by region and time of day.
Mitsubishi Electric noted that such payloads are currently developed and manufactured primarily in Europe and the United States. Geostationary communication satellites are used for wide-area coverage, broadcasting, and disaster resilience applications.
