Mitsubishi Electric gets JAXA subsidy for orbital transfer vehicle
Mitsubishi Electric Corporation (TOKYO: 6503) received a subsidy from the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency to develop orbital transfer vehicles under JAXA's Space Strategy Fund program, the company said on Wednesday.
The subsidy falls under the Technology for Realizing Flexible Mobility in Space program, which is financed by the second phase of JAXA's Space Strategy Fund. Mitsubishi Electric was selected as the representative organization for the project and will develop the orbital transfer vehicles in that capacity.
The orbital transfer vehicles are designed to move between different orbits to transport satellites and other payloads. The company plans to leverage navigation, guidance and control technologies developed through previous spacecraft projects including the H-II Transfer Vehicle "KOUNOTORI," the unmanned cargo transfer vehicle HTV-X, the Smart Lander for Investigating Moon, the Martian Moons Exploration spacecraft, and geostationary satellites.
The development aims to support the growing market for on-orbit services such as in-orbit assembly and manufacturing, refueling, inspection, repair and parts replacement as space development expands.
