Leonardo DRS, Inc. (NASDAQ: DRS) announced the introduction of THOR, a rugged embedded computing chassis designed for military combat vehicles and tactical platforms. The system is built to support artificial intelligence applications, sensor data fusion, and decision-making capabilities in combat environments.
THOR operates as a 3U VPX embedded computing chassis that aligns with the Sensor Open Systems Architecture (SOSA) and the Department of Defense's Modular Open Systems Approach. The system is engineered to meet MIL-STD-810, MIL-STD-1275, MIL-STD-461, and ATPD-2404 military standards for operation in extreme temperature, shock, vibration, and electromagnetic conditions.
The chassis supports Intel, Arm, and NVIDIA-based single board computers, along with high-performance GPUs for AI and machine learning applications. It features internal data rates up to 100 Gbps and includes cyber security capabilities for military network operations.
"THOR was designed from the ground up to meet that challenge," said Denny Crumley, senior vice president and general manager of the Land Electronics business unit at Leonardo DRS. "It brings together open-architecture flexibility, military-grade ruggedness, and the processing power required for AI-enabled operations."
The system is available as a configurable chassis kit or as a fully integrated subsystem combining computing, sensor, software, and secure communications technologies. Leonardo DRS stated that THOR is also suitable for commercial applications including robotics, machine vision, and transportation monitoring systems.
The company will display THOR at the AUSA Global Force Annual Meeting & Exposition in Huntsville, Alabama. Leonardo DRS develops defense technologies and provides capabilities in advanced sensing, network computing, force protection, and electric power systems for U.S. national security customers.
