KDDI Corporation (TYO: 9433) has completed a $65 million strategic investment in Coincheck Group N.V. (NASDAQ: CNCK), acquiring 28,536,516 newly issued ordinary shares at $2.28 per share. The investment gives the Japanese telecommunications company a 14.9% ownership stake in the digital asset platform.

The transaction closed under a share subscription and investment agreement signed on May 12, 2026. KDDI will receive registration rights for the acquired shares and has the right to nominate one individual for appointment to Coincheck Group's board as a non-executive director at the company's next Annual General Meeting, anticipated for September 2026.

Alongside the investment, Coincheck's Japanese subsidiary entered into a business alliance agreement with KDDI. The collaboration focuses on expanding the digital asset market in Japan through mutual customer referral programs and related revenue sharing arrangements.

KDDI, which serves over 100 million customers, provides telecommunications services, finance, energy, IoT services for connected cars, and data center connectivity. The company has expanded beyond telecommunications into areas including AI, finance, energy, retail, and cybersecurity.

Coincheck Group operates as a digital asset platform offering trade execution, custody, staking and asset management services. The company maintains a retail crypto asset exchange in Japan and is expanding into institutional services and digital asset infrastructure across multiple markets.

J.P. Morgan served as financial advisor to Coincheck Group, with De Brauw Blackstone Westbroek and Simpson Thacher & Bartlett LLP providing legal counsel for the transaction.
