JAL Engineering and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries form aircraft maintenance JV

JAL Engineering Co., a wholly owned subsidiary of Japan Airlines Co., and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. established a joint venture called Aero Breath Co., effective June 1, 2026, according to a company statement.

The new company will focus on aircraft aftermarket business, combining JAL Engineering's operational and maintenance expertise with Mitsubishi Heavy Industries' technical capabilities. Aero Breath aims to improve maintenance work efficiency and aircraft quality while reducing aircraft ground time.

Aero Breath will be headquartered at Aichi Prefectural Nagoya Airport and plans to begin regional aircraft maintenance services within fiscal 2026, pending necessary permits and approvals.

The joint venture has capital of ¥79 million, with JAL Engineering holding a 51% stake and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries owning 49%. Taro Matoba will serve as president and chief executive officer.

The partnership responds to growing demand for aircraft maintenance driven by recovering air passenger traffic. The business will focus on aftermarket services including airframe maintenance of regional aircraft.

Both parent companies stated they will collaborate with Aero Breath to contribute to Japan's aircraft aftermarket business development and support sustainable growth in the aviation industry while maintaining flight safety and reliability.
