Honda Motor Co., Ltd. (NYSE: HMC) and Princeton NuEnergy Inc. signed a memorandum of understanding to collaborate on lithium-ion battery recycling technologies, the companies announced January 5.

The agreement builds on technical validation work the companies have conducted since 2022 involving Princeton NuEnergy's plasma-based direct recycling and upcycling technologies for lithium-ion battery manufacturing scrap and end-of-life materials. Princeton NuEnergy has produced rejuvenated NMC cathode active material with performance characteristics comparable to virgin material through this collaboration.

The MOU establishes a framework for a strategic partnership focused on collaborative validation projects and potential future commercial-scale applications. The partnership aligns with Honda's global electrification strategy and Princeton NuEnergy's mission to expand production of battery-grade cathode active materials through a closed-loop platform.

"Our work with Honda shows strong technical alignment and a clear pathway for advancing circular battery materials," said Dr. Chao Yan, co-founder and CEO of Princeton NuEnergy. "This MOU reflects a shared commitment to accelerating the next phase of sustainable, high-performance material production."

Honda stated that the agreement represents a step forward in efforts to advance solutions that support the company's global electrification strategy and recognizes the importance of advanced recycling technologies in building a sustainable materials ecosystem.

Princeton NuEnergy recently received the "2025 Smart Move SC New Plant Award" for its U.S. manufacturing expansion. The company operates as an advanced materials manufacturer producing battery-grade cathode active material for lithium-ion batteries using proprietary closed-loop technology.
