Hebei Shoulang earns ISCC EU recycled carbon fuel certification

Hebei Shoulang New Energy Technology Co., Ltd., a facility in Tangshan, Hebei Province, China, has received International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) EU Recycled Carbon Fuel (RCF) producer certification, according to a statement from LanzaTech Global, Inc. (NASDAQ: LNZA).

The facility, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Beijing Shougang LanzaTech Technology Co., Ltd. (02553.HK), uses gas fermentation technology licensed from LanzaTech to convert waste gases from steel production into ethanol. The press release described the certification as the first of its kind under the ISCC EU scheme for ethanol produced from steel mill waste gases.

The ISCC EU certification is recognized by the European Commission and verifies compliance with sustainability criteria under the EU's Renewable Energy Directive (RED III). It is also approved by the UK's Department for Transport for compliance with the Renewable Transport Fuel Obligation and the UK SAF Mandate. The certificate was issued following an audit by SCS Global Services and its China-based affiliate, Beijing Green Forest Certification.

The certification allows verified volumes of Hebei Shoulang's ethanol to be marketed as recycled carbon fuel for use in EU marine and road markets, as well as for aviation fuel markets in the EU and UK, subject to additional regulatory requirements.

Meo Carbon Solutions supported LanzaTech and Hebei Shoulang through the certification process. LanzaTech also worked with Brookfield to address renewable power requirements for the facility.

"This certification proves that recycled carbon fuels can meet the same rigorous sustainability standards that govern the rest of the renewable fuel market," said Don Scott, ISCC Program Director at SCS Global Services.
